World War 3 fears: Express readers have their say on who will start a global war | World | News

As fears the world is getting closer to a new global conflict continue to rise, Express.co.uk readers have shared their thoughts on who could be the international player that ignites WW3.

Many experts, commentators and members of the public around the world fear Vladimir Putin is planning an aggression against NATO‘s eastern flank.

This has prompted warnings from defence officials in Sweden, Germany, Norway and the UK, saying their nations must get on a war footing to be able to face the worst possible scenario.

On Wednesday, the UK’s Chief of the General Staff General Sir Patrick Sanders called for the creation in Britain of a “citizen army”, which would see volunteers be trained to face an enemy on the battlefield.

Also many Express readers think Putin is a major threat to world peace, having already brought war back to Europe by invading the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and many areas of the rest of Ukraine in February 2022.

Answering a poll carried out online between January 22 and 25 which asked “Who do you think is most likely to start World War 3?“, 24 percent chose the Russian President as their answer.

However, the country to have received the most votes from this survey’s respondents – 30 percent – is Iran.

The Iranian regime led by its Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei regularly issues threats against the West, and in recent years it has grown closer to Russia – to which Tehran supplies kamikaze drones used against Ukrainians.

Moreover, Iran acts in the Middle East through three militant groups it supports militarily and economically – Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis.

All these three armed groups are currently engaged in conflict. While Hamas is facing the Israeli military in Gaza after its terrorists killed 1200 people during the October 7 attack, Hezbollah militants are clashing with Tel Aviv’s soldiers in northern Israel.

Since November, the Houthis – chosen by 1 percent of the poll’s respondents – have been threatening and attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea to disrupt global trade.

These manoeuvres, which have prompted a series of joint US and UK airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, have been carried out to demand the end of the war in Gaza, the group has said.

North Korea was chosen by 8 percent of the respondents. Much like Iran, this hermit country has also grown closer to Russia in recent months and is known to be providing it with munitions to use in Ukraine.

Pyongyang, which last year managed to send a spy satellite into space, has adopted an even more aggressive stance against the US and South Korea. Last week, the country’s leader Kim Jong-un said US policy was making war inevitable and described Seoul as a “primary foe” with which unification was no longer possible.

Among the other possible options Express.co.uk readers were presented with by the poll were the US (which received 14 percent of the total votes) and “the war has already started” (15 percent). Out of the total respondents, six percent voted “others” and two percent said “don’t know”.
