Vladimir Putin’s plan to ‘tear the US apart’ during 2024 election exposed | World | News

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to “tear the United States apart”, according to a leading expert.

In 2024, US President Joe Biden will run for reelection. His opponent will likely be former President Donald Trump, who is leading in the polls to become Republican Party nominee.

Mr Biden and Mr Trump will face each other for the second time after the divisive 2020 election, in which tensions culminated in the January 6 insurrection on Capitol Hill in 2021.

An expert on Russia, Mark Galeotti, has warned that Putin will look to capitalise on the polarised debate in the US to “tear the country apart.”

Speaking to the ‘This is Not a Drill’ podcast, Mr Galeotti said: “What the Russians have done is adopt a strategy where they don’t try and swing the results of elections because that is just not possible.

“What they try and do is take full advantage of the inevitable divisions in an election and magnify them.

“It can reach out to the extreme left and extreme right and try to enflame and to radicalise the most destructive forces so that, no matter who wins, the country is so torn apart by political feuding that it cannot muster consensus for a long-term strategy.

“Putin is going to look at what will be politically bloody, hard-fought American Presidential election and see how he can use it to tear the United States apart.”

The outcome of the 2024 election could have huge repercussions for Russia and Ukraine.

President Biden has given Ukraine billions in military aid and weapons to help Kyiv’s soldiers fight off the Russian invasion.

But many Republican Party Senators and Representatives have called for the US to reduce or even stop its funding for the Ukrainians.

There are fears that Mr Trump could turn off the taps for Ukraine. He has previously stated he would “end the war in 24 hours.”

Mr Galeotti also discussed Putin’s approach to the Middle East.

He added: “He likes to stir things up. For most of Putin’s reign, Russia has been at declared or undeclared war with someone.

“But I don’t think Putin is a warmonger for the sake of it, I don’t think he is a martial leader in that respect. What he likes is a certain low level of chaos.

“This is why the pre-Gaza crisis Middle East was ideal for him – a low-level crisis where you can play everyone against each other, not the kind of crisis that forces you to come off the fence.

“He wants people to be on edge and aware that he could project power onto their lands.”
