Urgent tornado alert issued for swathes of UK just days after houses destroyed | UK | News

A tornado alert has been issued for England and Wales as Storm Henk swoops in. The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) has said there is a high risk of serious damage from the weather front.

The warning covers Wales, the Midlands, parts of northern England and cities such as Coventry and Birmingham. Southeast and southwest England and the Channel Islands also fall under the warning.

In a statement, TORRO said: “The tornado risk, although low, may take on a bi-modal distribution – with one area of slightly higher risk being in the discussion area across the RoI on Saturday morning, and the second being across parts of Cent S England, SE England, the SE Midlands, and E Anglia on Saturday night.

“This latter area will be monitored on Saturday for a possible tornado watch.”

The severe weather warning comes just days after a tornado ripped through Stalybridge earlier this week. The incident occurred after Storm Gerrit swept through the UK causing high winds and flooding.

In a statement, Greater Manchester Police confirmed that it was a tornado that had ripped roofs off houses and devastated the local community.

They said: “Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were called to numerous reports of significant damage to various properties across Stalybridge in Tameside.

“It is believed the damage caused was due to a localised tornado. GMP declared this as a major incident due to the severity of the damage caused and potential risk to public safety.”

Chief superintendent Mark Dexter added: “Our highest priority is keeping people safe which is why we are advising those who have been displaced not to return or enter their properties which have significant damage until they have been assessed by structural engineers.

“This has understandably caused some disruption and, though we are not yet in a position to confirm when the area will return to normal, further updates will be communicated when we have them. I would like to use this opportunity to thank the community for their cooperation and patience.”

On the incoming weather system, TORRO added: “Instability will be rather meagre along the frontal zone, but may be enhanced by the two upper troughs.

“Low-level flow into the front will likely encourage a narrow line of intense rain, and the shear along the front may allow misocyclones to develop. These will assist in bringing strong wind gusts in places, perhaps to 60-70mph. There will also be the risk of isolated tornadoes.”

While Wales and England are under a tornado warning, Scotland will be hit by snow and high winds. WalesOnline reported that Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said that Scotland will be hit by snow and rain.

He explained: “As that rain hits the cold air across Scotland, I am expecting some significant snow, particularly over higher ground we could see in excess of 10cm of snow lying and, even to lower levels, some slushy snow is possible.

“This could cause some problems particularly on the roads. Elsewhere it is the rain and the strong winds we need to watch out for.

“Heavy rain across parts of Wales and strong gales likely around southern, south-western coastal parts in particular – so a pretty unsettled day.”
