A trip to the seaside is a great British tradition that families look forward to, even in the winter months. The fresh sea breeze is perfect for a dog walk and the wide open spaces are perfect for children to play in safely.

However, one former top seaside destination has fallen on hard times, so much so its beach is now littered with “dirty nappies” and has been branded ugly. Redcar in North Yorkshire is blessed with an eight-mile sandy stretch that used to be a firm favourite amongst those looking for a staycation spot.

But now visitors have bemoaned the condition of the seafront, claiming that they’ve made all sorts of disgusting discoveries.

Disgruntled tourists slammed the town and its beachfront, claiming that they found everything from dead birds to animal faeces.

One user, aghast at what they’d seen, took to Tripadvisor and said: “Well we counted 4 dead seagulls and almost double that in piles of dog mess. What should have been a lovely beach walk turned into spot the disgusting mess and avoid it. We won’t be coming back.”

Three users complained about “nappies” strewn across the stretch, with one writing: “What a shame, people ever take there rubbish away with them. The beach looks a complete mess. All the plastic, cans and dirty nappies, yes dirty nappies left to wash out in to the sea.”

And it’s not just the beach that’s taken a kicking from recent visitors, the town of Redcar itself hasn’t escaped the criticism either. According to the Office of National Statistics, Redcar came in fifth in the list of seaside towns with the highest levels of deprivation. Blackpool took the unwanted top spot.

Visitors have bemoaned the boarded up shop facades and the inescapable downtrodden feeling that the town exudes.

One visitor, from Perth, Australia, claimed she used to go to Redcar often, but was disappointed to see how far it had fallen. She wrote: “Three weeks ago we visited Redcar. We found it sadly depressing. As a young girl I used to visit Redcar often and have fond memories. We found it so dirty. Shops boarded up thousands of cigarette ends on the pavements.”
