Search and rescue teams have broken through debris that has trapped 41 men in a cave in .

The in the remote Himalayan state of Uttarakhand for 16 days after a collapse on the section of highway tunnel they were preparing caved in.

The men are expected to be pulled out today, one by one, and taken to hospitals.

Dozens of rescue workers with ropes and ladders are outside the tunnel with ambulances.

Authorities are yet to confirm what caused the incident in the 2.8 mile long tunnel, which collapsed about 200 metres from the entrance.

The trapped men have been getting food, water, light, oxygen and medicines through a pipe.

“About six or seven metres are left,” said Deepak Patil, a senior officer leading the rescue.

Asked whether the men could be reached on Tuesday, he replied: “Sure, 100 percent.”

Speaking about the men, Mr Dhami said: “. They said, ‘take as many days as you require, don’t worry about us’.”

Rescuers on Monday brought in “rat miners” to drill through a narrow pipe and help pull out the men after high powered machines failed to bring results.

Rat mining is a hazardous and controversial digging method used in India mostly to remove coal deposits through narrow passages.

The name comes from its resemblance to rats burrowing through narrow holes.
