Kali Uchis‘ genre-jumping career has so far been evenly divided between Spanish and English-language albums, which feels about right for an artist who was born in Virginia but spent chunks of her childhood in her father’s native Colombia. “When you aren’t just one thing and you are as multidimensional of an artist as I am,” she says, “I think it’s a lot harder for people to figure out how to sell me as a product. But I think they don’t realize that being multidimensional is a lot of different people’s experiences… I’m not going to compromise who I am or what I’m doing or show only just this one tiny piece of myself.”

In an interview with Julyssa Lopez on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now, Uchis breaks down her new album, Orquídeas, including her collaborations with Peso Pluma and Karol G. “I feel like every song really is its own era and its own aesthetic,” she says of the album, which manages to be both sonically diverse and relentlessly uptempo.
